Chapter 7: This Is What a Mosaic Actually Is
There is a definition of mosaic that most people know. Small pieces of colored glass or stone assembled into something larger — each piece distinct, each piece complete on its own, the image only revealing itself when you step back far enough to see what all of those pieces are doing together.
What I didn't understand until recently is that this is exactly how I have always worked.
Spend enough years as a personal image consultant and you develop an instinct for the unexpected combination. It is never the safe one or the one that follows the rules of what goes with what — it is the one that makes a woman stop in front of the mirror and recognize herself for the first time. The burgundy worn with the orange. The stripe paired with the floral. The piece of jewelry that has no business sitting next to the other piece of jewelry and yet somehow makes both of them more extraordinary for the proximity.
That instinct didn't leave when I moved from styling to design. It followed me to the design table and it's in every collection I've ever created. But this one was built from it deliberately, consciously and entirely on purpose — which is why it took longer than any collection I've made before and why it finally has a name that feels completely true.
The Mosaic Collection begins with two colorways that shouldn't work together and are completely extraordinary because they do, with new colorways arriving throughout the year.
The first is Tranquil Fluidity — Apatite, Turquoise and Freshwater Pearls — bold and soothing simultaneously, the colors of a tranquil beach walk, fresh air and clean linen that announce themselves without apology and somehow leave you feeling completely at peace.
The second is Wildly Lush — Amethyst, Garnet, Ruby and Rose Quartz — soft and passionate in the same breath, the feeling of something romantic and alive and entirely its own.
Neither colorway is what you would expect from the other and yet together they are exactly what a mosaic is — distinct pieces that shouldn't work together creating something more beautiful and more meaningful than either could be alone.
The Mosaic Collection will grow throughout the year. Each drop introduces two new colorways — new stones, new combinations, new unexpected pairings that follow the same philosophy. This is only the beginning of what this collection will become.
